Originally built in 1887 and expanded in 1913, the Armoury has always been a prominent fixture in Old Québec. It is home to the oldest Francophone regiment in Canada.

Unfortunately, it was severely damaged by a fire in April 2008.

However, in November 2012, the Government of Canada unveiled its massive reconstruction project for The Armoury, which represented an investment of over $100 million.

The Scope

Zone Display Cases collaborated with the Voltigeurs de Quebec and with STGM Architects for the design, production and installation of a variety of museum display cases.

These cases, located in the Grand Foyer and in the Memorial Hall of the building, are used for both permanent and temporary displays.

In the Grand Foyer, two large glass facades with very tall access doors were part of Zone’s scope and each served to display mannequins wearing uniforms from the Canadian National Defence.

Challenge

The budget constraints for this project was the main challenge.

The scope of work included a dozen of medium to large-sized display cases to be used for both permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Our Solutions

Zone has proposed a variety of value-engineering solutions to bring costs down and meet the tight budget.

Initially designed as complete two-story displays, the vitrines in the Grand Foyer were revised to combine a glass façade with access doors and a recessed niche that would be built by the general contractor.

This, in combination with other solutions, allowed for important cost-savings on this fantastic local project.
